Market Manager

  • Location: Española, NM (partial on-site and partial remote)

  • Status: 1099-NEC, part-time (roughly 15-20 hours/week during market season June-October, intermittent work outside of market season)

  • Rate: $20/hour

  • Reports to: The Española Farmers Market Board of Directors

Summary of the Role: The Española Market Manager is the day-to-day steward of the Española Farmers Market, coordinating everything from vendor relations and market-day operations to grant reporting and fundraising. This is a hands-on, highly independent role that combines Monday morning market management with behind-the-scenes administration, community partnerships, and compliance work throughout the season. The Manager is the face of the market to the vendors, customers, and community partners, and plays a key role in keeping the market, now in its 4th decade, a reliable source of fresh, local food for Española individuals and families.

Commitment: For over thirty years, The Española Farmers Market has connected local growers with a community that has limited access to fresh produce. The Market Manager is expected to share this commitment to food equity and access, helping to ensure SNAP, WIC, and Fresh Rx customers are welcomed and served as easily as any other shopper, and treating every vendor, volunteer, and community member with warmth and respect.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manage market day operation every Monday, June through October from 7 AM - 2 PM, including:

    • Collect vendor applications and enforce market rules

    • Support vendors in obtaining SNAP training

    • Setup, run, and take down Information Booth (canopies, tables, merchandise, etc.)

    • Issue SNAP/DUFB tokens to customers

    • Collect vendor booth fees and answer questions from vendors and customers

  • Manage backend market operations:

    • Update market applications, outreach flyers, documents, etc.

    • Count tokens/slips for various food assistant programs and write vendor checks

    • Maintain reporting for food assistance programs (SNAP, DUFB, Fresh Rx)

    • Complete Accounting spreadsheet annually, keeping close track of all receipts, expenses, transactions, etc. throughout the season

    • Submit press releases and monthly (during market season) ads to the Rio Grande Sun for publication

    • Apply annually for grants, and seek other fundraising opportunities

    • Manage banking (write vendor checks, make deposits, etc.)

    • Register and attend annual Local Food Connects Conference first week of March

    • Renew business license annually with City of Española

    • Maintain lease relationship with Northern New Mexico College and coordinate meetings

    • Maintain relationship with fiscal sponsor Farm to Table

    • Oversee social media contractor during market season, ensuring content stays on-brand, accurate and timely

    • Manage social media directly during the off-season, maintaining community engagement and highlighting food equity work, partner organizations, and market news

    • Handle tax reporting to IRS each January

    • Represent the market at community and partner events, and build and maintain relationships with local organizations, schools, and agencies that support the market’s food-access mission

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (canopies, tables, and market supplies) and work outdoors in all weather, including extreme heat

  • Comfort handling cash, basic bookkeeping, and online banking

  • Available every Monday, June through October, and intermittently off-season

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle vendor logistics, banking, grant deadlines, and reporting requirements without supervision

  • Excellent verbal and written communication, for audiences ranging from vendors and shoppers to the Board, funders, and media

  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to update documents, work within basic spreadsheets, etc.

  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with community partners and organizations (e.g. NNMC, Farm to Table, NMFMA, City of Espanola, funders, etc.)

  • Comfort with basic grant reporting and fundraising, and willingness to seek out new funding opportunities

  • Calm, fair conflict-resolution skills for vendor and customer concerns

  • Self-motivated and trustworthy with minimal oversight; able to balance independent judgement with accountability to the Board

  • Genuine commitment to food access, local agriculture, and the community

  • Basic social media proficiency and enough comfort with content/branding to oversee contractor’s work and post off-season

Preferred but Not Required: Proficiency in Spanish, basic knowledge of grant writing, Shopify, and non-profit organizations
